Snapchat is introducing a chatbot called “My AI” powered by ChatGPT. It will initially only be available for Snapchat Plus subscribers, but will eventually be available for all users. My AI may seem familiar, as it is essentially ChatGPT within Snapchat, except Snapchat has more response restrictions. It has been trained to adhere to company guidelines to avoid inappropriate or controversial responses. My AI is also unable to write essays, presumably to prevent it from being banned in schools.
Snapchat has gone in an interesting direction in its addition to the AI arms race. Rather than treat ChatGPT as a productivity tool, it is instead using it as a kind of persona. Snapchat is one of the first clients of Foundry, OpenAI’s enterprise tier for GPT-3.5. It will be interesting to see if any other companies turn to AI as a social tool rather than a timesaver.
