According to the Guardian, the International Baccalaureate has said that students could use the chatbot when writing essays, but had to cite its responses like any other source. The IB sees the development of chatbots as a unique learning opportunity, treating knowledge obtained through it like any other material. The IB argues that in the future, understanding the context, quality, bias, and creativity of an essay will be more important than the writing itself.
While many school boards and teachers are concerned about the use of ChatGPT to cheat, the IB takes a different approach by allowing it when cited. It will be interesting to see how many schools turn in this direction as time goes on.
