ChatGPT has fanned the fears of a US-China AI arms race

While the race to develop AI has until now been between tech giants, it has become increasingly important to geopolitical strategy. AI can be used to automate fighter jets, create large-scale propaganda machines, stage cyberattacks, and develop tools that could be important for economic growth. These opportunities have created an arms race between China and the US, where technology is not exchanged across borders quite so easily.


Matters are complicated by the fact that many hardware parts necessary for this kind of development are produced in China and Taiwan. Faster advancement in AI will be a sign of a dominant global power, so the stakes are high for both nations.
