ChatGPT blocked in Italy due to privacy concerns

On Friday, Italy’s data protection watchdog issued a ban on ChatGPT due to privacy violations. The ban will come into immediate effect, resulting in the temporary limitation of ChatGPT use. The Italian National Authority for Personal Data Protection made the decision due to a data breach on March 20 that put the confidentiality of users’ conversations and payment information at risk.


The Italian watchdog is asking OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to respond with protection measures within 20 days, or risk a fine of 4% annual turnover. Both Italy and the European police agency Europol have warned about the collection and storage of personal data, as well as AI-assisted fraud.
