
Apple has acquired WaveOne, a startup that is developing AI algorithms for compressing videos. When asked, Apple would not confirm the sale, but WaveOne’s website has been shut down and former employees now work at Apple. The former head of sales and business development announced the sale in a LinkedIn post from last month.
WaveOne created a “content-aware” video compression algorithm that leveraged AI-powered object detection. This allowed for the prioritization of faces and text when compressing and decompressing videos to save bandwidth. WaveOne claimed this approach could reduce the size of video files by half. Apple may want to use this technology to make streaming more efficient and save on bandwidth costs, but we will have to see.
