AI development will get more expensive as websites charge for data

While AI tools have proliferated in recent months, they are extremely expensive due to chips and training. Development will soon get even pricier as websites such as Reddit and Stack Overflow begin charging developers for using their data to train AI models. Media companies such as Condé Nast are also calling on developers to negotiate the use of data for training and respect their right to compensation.

The wild west of AI might be getting tamed in coming months as it becomes more expensive and complicated to train generative models. This could calm fears of rapid AI development, or slow down compelling and helpful projects. As more sectors start using AI, we will have to learn to live with it in a mutually beneficial way.
