AI can predict enzyme functions

A new AI tool can predict the functions of enzymes based on their amino acid sequences, even when the enzymes are poorly understood by humans. The tool, called CLEAN, is more accurate than currently used tools. It works similarly to ChatGPT, using the language of protein sequencing to predict what they might do.

Advances in genomics have identified many enzymes, but scientists have little knowledge of what each enzyme actually does. CLEAN can not only predict the function of understudied enzymes, it can also correct mislabeled enzymes.

Researchers are making CLEAN accessible online this month, in hopes that it will be broadly used by the scientific community.
